Many years ago, the Keywords meta tag was the only thing you needed to know in order to optimise your website. You just put your keywords here, and you would come up in searches for that phrase.
Keywords Meta Tag
However, Google soon realised that this was a very easy way to cheat, and websites were getting rankings for phrases that didn’t even occur on the website. As a result, the Keywords meta tag is not even read now by the major search engines.
Description Meta Tag
The only meta tag that is used at all by Google is the Description meta tag, and even this is not used in determining the rank for the web page. It is sometimes used by Google on the search engine results page (SERP). It is the short description that is displayed below the page title.
Title Meta Tag
The tag that is the most important of all for SEO is the Title tag. It is not actually a meta tag, but many people think of it as such. The Title tag is both displayed at the top of the browser window when you are viewing a webpage, and is also displayed as the title of the page on the SERP.
You should always have your keywords in the Title tag, and ideally right at the beginning of the tag. Do not put your company name at the beginning of the title on every page on your website as you are wasting the easiest way to get rankings. If you do nothing else to optimise your site, put your keywords at the beginning of your Title.
Do not repeat your keywords in the Title, but you may wish to have an alternative (but similar) phrase in the latter part of the tag. However, because this Title is also displayed on the SERP, this should read also as an advert in conjunction with your Description tag. You want people to click on this link to go to your website, and this is your chance to persuade them.
